TREATMENT

THE IMPORTANCE OF POSTURE

Muscles work in symmetry, to the left and right of the body, as well as front and back. This aids balance and allows you to move efficiently with the least amount of fatigue and muscle strain. Body asymmetry creates postural misalignment, muscles become dysfunctional, and the other muscles in the body will adjust and overcompensate which can create physical problems and pain.

We are more sedentary now than ever before, with many of us spending large proportions of our days sat at a desk. This, combined with old injuries or repetitive movements such as driving or sitting crossed legged, causes muscles to become dysfunctional. Poor posture inflicts extra wear and tear and increases the likelihood of accidents and injuries. Your muscles will have to work harder to keep you upright and balanced and will become tight and inflexible. To maintain the body’s functional design, it is imperative to regularly move all muscles, body parts and joints through their full range of movement. Movement is fundamental and will determine how well your body adapts to the stressors on it.

Motion and movement heal – the body is meant to move properly in alignment.

As a Postural Alignment Specialist, I assess the whole body rather than the symptom. I create a personalised menu of exercises to treat your posture which will wake up, stretch and strengthen the dysfunctional muscles. Progressively, these bespoke exercises will bring the body back into alignment and reduce pain.

For Postural Alignment to be effective, it takes time, effort and commitment. By completing your menu on a regular basis, you will create changes as muscles habituate and bring the body into functional alignment. This will improve your range of movement and reduce the risk of future injuries.

ABOUT

ABOUT

IMG_2529_edited.jpg

I am a Registered General Nurse who – after twelve years of working on hospital wards in different specialities – returned to university to study further and become a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse - Health Visitor. I have worked in Leeds and Australia and am now based in the beautiful city of Worcester.

I spent 18 months backpacking throughout Australia, South East Asia and China in 2003-4, with my now-husband before we settled down and had our two wonderful daughters. Outside work, I love yoga, walking and travelling.

It was on a Zoom yoga lesson during lockdown, where I was first introduced to the Egoscue method. My husband Matt, hurt his knee following a sporting injury in 2012 and has spent years in pain ever since. He'd been treated by a whole range of specialists and therapists, but their help only ever provided short term relief. I convinced him to try Postural Alignment Therapy and after completing a regular menu of exercises – the pain ceased and he has since been discharged from consultant care. This fascinated me. After further research and feeling the benefits of attending regular postural alignment classes myself, I was inspired to train and become a Postural Alignment Specialist and qualified in 2021.

As a Nurse, I have always had an interest in the workings of the human body and helping patients during recovery and when in pain. The Egoscue method transformed my way of thinking to focusing on the body as a unit – and the importance of looking at the underlying root cause (posture) rather than focusing on the symptoms (pain). I passionately believe in Postural Alignment Therapy and am constantly amazed by what can be achieved. I can provide the right tools, education and guidance to realign your posture and reduce the symptoms of pain.
